Case Study: Nelsons Column
Nelson is made of stone, Arts Heritage doesn't like stone it can't be patinated and is therefore very boring, not as boring as the effects of fine dust in display cases (see pervious academic research to fall asleep to to) - But he has a nice bronze sword a few tonnes of bronze at his feet and Landseers Lions to keep him company.
Arts Heritage was required to reconstruct a substantial number of missing or damaged components using traditional craft techniques. As part of this programme of architectural metalwork restoration, a previous survey had incorrectly identified the side gates as iron and consequently specified them for painting. Our investigation, however, revealed intricate bronze heraldic details and acanthus motifs throughout the scheme. This discovery enabled us to reverse the earlier restoration interventions and to re-patinate the bronze using original foundry methods, employing direct heat and stippling—techniques that continue to be used in contemporary fine-art foundries.
